AUSSIE trained bomb detection dogs will play a crucial role in the next phase of the campaign against Islamic State fighters in Iraq.
As the terrorists from ISIL or Daesh are defeated and retreat they will leave behind hundreds of concealed bombs or IEDs and dogs are the most effective method of detecting the insidious weapons.
Joint Operations Chief Vice-Admiral David Johnston yesterday revealed that more than 8000 insurgent fighters had been killed.
“The advance of Daesh has been halted in Iraq,” he said.
However, he warned that the Islamic extremist army still contained between 20,000 and 31,000 fighters including 3400 foreign fighters.
